Both CNN and Fox News broadcasted the president’s highjack of Monday night’s coronavirus briefing, but with very different chyrons at the bottom of their screens.

Comparing the two networks labeling of the briefing, which was a bizarre event by even Trump’s usual standards, lays bare the different messages Americans receive based on where they get their news.

The Fox News crowd is simply living in an alternative alternative reality with alternatives facts—As you can see in this side-by-side chyron comparison:

The president was apparently fired up by a piece in Sunday’s New York Times which gave a timeline of when Trump had crucial information and when he acted—on those occasions he did act.

Incredibly, Trump opened the briefing with a prepared video intended to show his coronavirus response in a more favorable light.

After the video, Trump attacked the media while Fox News accompanied him, turning out a new ribbon about every minute, each highlighting Trump’s side of the story. It is hard not to wonder if Fox News had gotten a heads-up before this show.

In comparison, for the first fifteen minutes of the briefing, CNN’s chyron referred to the Times article:

After fifteen minutes, CNN displayed new Breaking News chyrons calling out Trump for his concurrent attempt at revisionist history, while Fox continued to supply Trump talking points, each preceded by a hypnotic repetition of the president’s name.

CNN continued to turn out chyrons covering what was happening at the briefing, while Fox ironically quoted Trump as wanting to keep the media honest.

This may be another case of Churchill’s “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”.

At 6:30, a half hour into what was supposed to be a coronavirus briefing, CNN pointed out to viewers the president’s refusal to acknowledge any mistakes.

On the other side, Fox quoted Trump calling a non-Fox reporter a fake.

At 6:40, as Trump continued to attack the media, CNN began to underscore Trump’s inaction.

Fox merely quoted bits from his rant.

After nearly an hour of Trump’s tirade, Fox continued to pull quotes from the president, even if they were absurd…or questionable.

Finally, Fox left a single chyron in place to make sure viewers knew they had indeed tuned in to what was supposed to be a coronavirus briefing.

CNN continued to roll through chyrons highlighting what had actually occurred.
