Artists and the arts have been particularly hard hit by the precautions necessary to slow the spread coronavirus.

Venues have closed and canceled performances, and even large performing arts companies have had to lay off or cut pay to staff. Artists generally rely on public exposure to their work and often supplement their creative work with independent gigs.

While the $2 trillion economic stimulus package signed into law does extend unemployment benefits to self-employed and independent contractors, many of these vital contributors to our society will still need help to weather the pandemic.

Here are 16 resources for artists struggling to get by.

Artists’ Fellowship Inc.

Artists’ Fellowship, Inc. is offering emergency aid “to professional fine artists and their families…dealing with immediate MEDICAL emergencies and their aftermaths.”

Amplifier

ART HEALS. Submit Your Artwork. Win $1K.

Canva / Amplifier

Amplifier is running an art contest, and 50 winners will take home $1000 dollar prizes.

They are looking for two kinds of work: “public health and safety messages that can help flatten the curve through education” and “symbols that help promote mental health, well-being, and social change work —during these stressful times.”

Even if you don’t want to submit a piece, you can vote for your favorites on the site.

The Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation

Financial assistance is available for painters, printmakers, and sculptors who can demonstrate at least ten years of work in their field.

Anonymous Was a Woman

AWAW is offering a no strings attached COVID-19 Emergency Relief Grant to visual artists who are over 40 and identify as female.

Hurry though! The application period is April 6 – April 8.

Ad Relief

Ad Relief is offering a grant for anyone involved in advertising and promotion in the Los Angeles area.

Arts Leaders of Color Emergency Fund

Arts Administrators of Color Network has started a GoFundMe effort in support of Black, Indigenous, People of Color artists and administrators. This also includes staff who work in support of the arts, “who have been financially impacted due to COVID-19.”

Carnegie Fund for Authors

The Carnegie Fund for Authors is an established grant for American professional authors in need of emergency funds.

Eligibility requires at least one full-length work published in print or as an e-book “by a mainstream publisher.”

The Craft Emergency Relief Fund is offering grants currently focused on “artists in the craft community.”

The money is being reserved for those infected with COVID-19 and requiring intensive medical care.

 

Foundation for Contemporary Arts

Foundation for Contemporary Arts is offering “relief grants to artists whose performances or exhibitions are either unexpectedly canceled or indefinitely postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.”

Hero Initiative

The Hero Initiative is providing financial aid for working comic book artists, including letterers and colorists, that are struggling due to the pandemic.

Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Arts Emergency Relief Fund

The LA DCA COVID-19 Arts Emergency Relief Fund is currently offering their “Round One” of grants.

These are available for “LA-based performing artists who were financially affected by the unanticipated disruption caused by COVID-19.”

Artists in fields outside of the performing arts can keep an eye on this organization for “forthcoming opportunities.”

PEN America

PEN America is expanding its Writers’ Emergency Fund to distribute grants based on “inability to meet an acute financial need, especially one resulting from the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.”

The Photographer Fund

Rauschenberg Emergency Grants

New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) will administer grants for the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation/ These monies are to be awarded to “professional artists of all disciplines…for unexpected medical emergencies.”

Women’s Center for Creative Work

WCCW offers “a short form application and rolling weekly deadline for grants.”

This organization supports low-income artists in the Greater Los Angeles and surrounding areas who identify as female, transgender, nonbinary, or are people of color.
