One-third of the lower 48 states could face major to moderate flooding this year, potentially affecting 128 million people across the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its annual spring forecast Thursday.

While NOAA does not expect flooding to be as intense or long-lasting as the deluges that swept across the Midwest last year, the agency says 1.2 million people may be at risk for “major” flooding, while the escalating coronavirus crisis may make resources scarce and recovery more difficult.

Cities, towns and regions hit by the devastating flood conditions last year are prepping for the one-two punch of the virus and flooding and keeping an eye on dwindling resources. “We’re just praying every day that we don’t end up in a state of anarchy,” Gretna, LA mayor Belinda Constant told the Wall Street Journal.
