With the El Paso shooting this weekend ecofascist ideology is now using “legitimate environmental concerns to justify racist polices and, sometimes, mass murder,” per Gizmodo.
21-year-old Patrick Crusius’s manifesto was a white nationalist spewing of racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric but also included his violent solution to humanity’s destruction of the environment: just “get rid of enough people” to make the American lifestyle “more sustainable.”
He’s not the only racist in history to tie population control to protecting the Earth. Back in the 18th century Thomas Malthus said we’d never have enough food for everyone…yet in the 21st century, we’re all still here. New Zealand’s gunman who killed 51 people in Christchurch earlier this year, was also identified as an ecofascist.
Climate change is becoming a deadly part of white nationalist rhetoric, fueling policies of exclusion and hate. With such loud constant voices, ecofascist ideas become more public.
