CODE RED: This is a Constitutional Crisis. Barr says Trump administration can ignore the SCOTUS ruling and add citizenship question to census

BREAKING:  Trump’s Attorney General William Barr said Monday that he believes the Trump administration can legally add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, though the Supreme Court ruled against its inclusion last month.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Barr said he has been in regular contact with President Trump about the question, which the president is determined to see featured on the decennial survey.

“I agree with him that the Supreme Court decision was wrong,” Barr told the AP.”

“If Trump’s administration tries to end-run the Court, it will set off a constitutional crisis of a kind that even Richard Nixon ultimately did not dare to provoke.

To Trump and those around him, I suspect, the crisis has already begun. To them, it consists in this: Trump’s own Supreme Court—bought with dark money and earned with power politics—ruled against him on an issue of the highest consequence. This is a first for this Court, and Trump seems not to know how to handle it.

The Census Case Could Provoke a Constitutional Crisis – The Atlantic

“The Supreme Court’s June ruling was a blow to Trump , who has been pressing for the government to ask about citizenship on next year’s census. The U.S. Census Bureau’s experts have said demanding such information would discourage immigrants from participating in the survey and result in a less accurate census. That in turn would redistribute money and political power away from Democratic-led cities where immigrants tend to cluster to whiter, rural areas where Republicans do well.”

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says the Trump administration wants to put the citizenship question on the 2020 census to discourage Hispanic-Americans from being counted for fear information could be used to possibly deport one of their relatives. (July 8)

After the President tweeted his intention to move forward with the citizenship question, a lawyer for the Justice Department said, “I do not have a deeper understanding of what that means at this juncture other than what the President has tweeted.”

“As Trump continues to mow down one democratic norm after another and tries to defy Congress and the courts on a regular basis, one has to reevaluate the efficacy and urgency of impeachment,” Jennifer Rubin writes in Opinions.
